"In terms of total market valuation at the time of its offering, Facebook holds the title of largest in the U.S., at $104.1 billion, ahead of United Parcel Service's (UPS) $67 billion valuation when it went public in 1999, according to Dealogic.

At that valuation, Facebook would be the 23rd largest U.S. company by market cap, ahead of Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) and Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO), according to Capital. It would be the 909th in terms of revenue."

via The Economist

"The press seemed to say [Mr Saverin] did it to avoid [taxes], he has to pay taxes. He had to pay huge taxes, hundreds of millions of dollars to give up his citizenship and if it [Facebook] hadn't gone public or if something had gone wrong with the IPO, he would have been in a real bind.

When you give up your American citizenship, it's not fair as far as I'm concerned, but the rules are that you have to pay everything, you have to pay taxes on everything you own and then you can leave. I mean no other country in the world does that, we've got our own Berlin Wall, it's very expensive to leave, to give up your citizenship." -- Jim Rogers

via Felix Salmon

"The Facebook IPO is now set to raise an absolutely astonishing amount of money — as much as $18 billion, if the greenshoe is exercised and the offering prices at the top of the indicated range. As a result, it’s certain to be the single largest technology IPO of all time. (Most companies don’t even have a valuation of $18 billion when they IPO, let alone have $18 billion worth of stock for sale to the public.)"

via Quora

"If you are accepted to an accelerator; you don't need them

Seriously, they're a business. They'll typically offer you a pretty poor deal (though now terms have become a little nicer), for 6% of your company. In TechStars case, they had 400 applicants for 10 accepted companies. I have to cite that statistic, because they pride themselves on that number :). As a thought experiment, if you're a business, and your success is solely dependent on the best returns you can get, you're going to pick the ten companies that don't need you; the companies that will find a way to be successful with or without you. The dirty secret, if you're accepted, you probably don't need them." -- Devin Fee

“It serves the interest of the investors who can come up with whatever valuation they want when there are no revenues,” explained Paul Kedrosky, a venture investor and entrepreneur. “Once there is no revenue, there is no science, and it all just becomes finger in the wind valuations.”

"In less than two generations, during the late 19th century, Japan transformed itself from a medieval backwater to a dynamic modern economy. They did it with comparatively little outside capital, public or private. It’s probably fair to say that Japan was more successful than any of the nations that, decades later, received government-to-government assistance through the Marshall Plan, the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund..."
